How to actually raise your score.

No fluff, no upsell — the things that move the number, and the things that don't.

How many points can I realistically gain?

College Board and Khan Academy found that around 20 hours of focused official practice was associated with an average gain of roughly 115 points. Gains are not linear, though: moving from 1100 to 1250 is far easier than moving from 1450 to 1550, because the questions you're still missing at the top are the genuinely hard ones. Plan for the climb to get steeper as you go.

Should I study Math or Reading & Writing first?

Start with your lower section. Your total is just the two sections added together, so a point is a point — and points come much cheaper off a lower base. Gaining 50 points on a 520 Math takes far less time than gaining 50 on a 700 Reading & Writing. Most students do the opposite and grind their stronger section because it feels better.

What's the fastest way to raise a Math score?

Learn Desmos properly. The digital SAT puts a built-in Desmos graphing calculator on every math question, and most students barely use it. Graphing both sides of an equation to find intersections, reading intercepts and vertices straight off a parabola, and plugging answer choices in as values will solve a large share of the math section without doing the algebra at all. An hour spent learning the calculator usually beats an hour spent drilling problems.

Do full-length practice tests actually help?

Only if you review them. The score comes from the review, not the sitting: go back through every question you missed and name the reason — content you didn't know, a question you misread, or a timing mistake. Those three need three different fixes. A practice test you never review is just a tiring Saturday.

How do I stop running out of time?

Stop fighting single questions. Every question is worth the same, so two minutes spent on the hardest one costs you two easy ones later. Flag it, move on, and come back with whatever time is left. The digital SAT is section-adaptive — your performance on the first module sets the difficulty of the second — so banking the questions you can definitely get right matters more than conquering any one problem.

How much vocabulary do I need to memorize?

Less than you think, but not zero. The digital SAT tests words in context rather than isolated definitions, so rote memorization of obscure words is mostly wasted effort. What does pay off is a few hundred high-frequency academic words — the kind that show up in Words in Context questions — reviewed a little at a time until they're automatic.

When should I start studying?

Roughly three to four months before your test date, at four or five hours a week. That is enough runway for a meaningful gain without the burnout that comes from cramming, and it leaves room to sit two or three full-length practice tests with real review in between. If your test is sooner, prioritise practice tests and your weaker section over everything else.
